New, fairer approach to senior driver license assessments

Grey Power New Zealand welcomes new guidelines that end routine cognitive testing for healthy older drivers. 
After two years of advocacy, Grey Power and its partners convinced NZ Transport Agency and health authorities to change the assessment process. 
The University of Auckland reviewed the evidence and found no support for routine cognitive tests for healthy seniors. 
Now, doctors will use a holistic approach. They will consider overall health, medical history, vision, and physical abilities. On-road driving assessments may be used if needed. 
This change aims to make the process fairer and more evidence based. 
Driving is important for older people’s independence and social life. Decisions about fitness to drive should focus on the person’s abilities, not just age or a single test. The new guidelines were developed by NZTA, the Ministry of Health, the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, and the Office for Seniors. 
Grey Power urges members to use their regular GP for license renewals. They also want feedback from anyone still facing unnecessary cognitive tests. Grey Power will monitor the rollout to ensure fairness and consistency. Grey Power’s goal is a licensing system that balances safety with respect for older New Zealanders.
